The Smithfield development is a tripartite agreement involving the Oswestry Town Council, the Oswestry Cattle Auctions and the Developer, Liberty Mercian Ltd.
Liberty Mercian Ltd was successfully appointed by the Town Council and Auctioneers following invitations to make submissions for the redevelopment of the Oswestry Livestock Market and to look at a mixed use brownfield redevelopment scheme on the balance of the site.
Liberty Mercian Ltd is a joint venture company that was formed by Liberty Properties PLC and Mercian Developments Ltd in November 1999. Since its formation the joint venture of these two companies has either contracted or successfully developed in excess of £600 million of retail, leisure and other commercial development throughout the UK, including a number of Livestock Market schemes. Livestock Market schemes include the development of Ruthin Livestock Market, the relocation of Market Drayton Livestock Market, the redevelopment of Aberystwyth Livestock Market and assisting in the proposals for relocation of the Abergavenny and Monmouth Livestock Markets.
Oswestry Cattle Auctions operate the Market on the town's Smithfield site every Wednesday, for all classes of Store and Finished Livestock. There is a weekly sale of Calves and the Store Cattle Sales are supplemented by monthly and bi-annual special sales. OTMS Collections take place every Monday and the team of professionals that operate the Market are always available for consultation and advice related to livestock and other agricultural matters. With a catchment area of mixed productive lowland and vibrant Welsh upland that between them attract a wide range of stock, from early Spring Lambs to excellent supplies of main crop Lambs and Hoggets and a regular supply of Finished Beef, OTM Cattle and Bull Beef Cattle, OCA is supported by farmers and buyers from far and wide.
Oswestry Town Council aims "To be a local community champion by seeking to enable and empower local initiatives and opportunities to improve the quality of life for the inhabitants of the town of Oswestry."
